Super Awesome Mix

Summer Mixtape Magic: Music, Memories, and Nostalgia

Super Awesome Mix Season 4 Episode 13

What if a mixtape could change your entire perspective on summer? Join Matt and Samer on a nostalgic journey through sun-soaked tunes that might just make even the biggest summer skeptics (like Samer) start to appreciate the season. Kicking off with the fan-favorite "Waiting on the Summer" by VHS Collection, recommended by @mindys_memories, we explore how a perfect blend of music and memories can transform the hottest months. Listen as we reflect on how our Instagram community shaped this mixtape and the joy of experiencing summer through different life stages.

From the timeless beat of Weezer's "Island in the Sun" to the infectious energy of Tom Cochran's "Life is a Highway," our conversation is filled with musical nostalgia and fun anecdotes. We reminisce about the 1998 hit that cleverly sampled Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, and ponder the value of "smart comedies" like Bullworth. The episode takes a quirky turn as we discuss New Yorker cartoons and a memorable Seinfeld moment, before diving into the operatic brilliance of Meatloaf's "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth." Packed with light-hearted banter and heartfelt recollections, this episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to enhance their summer soundtrack!

Speaker 1:

welcome back to another super awesome mix. My name is matt said home, alongside my co-host and co-founder of super awesome mix, sammer abu salbi. Sammer, how we doing this week I am hanging in there.

Speaker 2:

You know let's start started summer. If you're a longtime listener of the show, you know it's not my favorite season, but you know what? We might change that a little bit with some of these picks today on this mix. So we're not going to, by the way, I'm just gonna go ahead and spoil it summertime, it comes every year.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you've moved to a cooler climate. You're not in texas anymore, but you're still not happy that it even exists, that it gets warm, right, exactly.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I might just have to like hop on down to visit my friend in australia for the summer months. Here just have a forever winter.

Speaker 1:

Oh, sounds lovely so bizarre, so bizarre, okay, um, but you know we're talking about songs of summer today. We did this a couple years ago. We um got some suggestions from some listeners and we put together a mixtape based on that, around songs of summer. And this time we did it again and we got a lot of contributions from you guys, so we're going to be introducing those and give a shout out to the listener, the follower who threw it out to us, and then, uh, we each tacked on a couple of our own at the end. So, um, I think we did a pretty good job I think so this was a very enjoyable mix.

Speaker 2:

Uh, there's some. There's some great songs this summer here, so thank you again to everyone who follows us on instagram at super awesome mix. Next time we do a follower mix, be sure to follow us there and send in your suggestions. It's always a lot of fun to have everyone send uh. Send their songs along also makes our jobs a lot easier it does.

Speaker 1:

It does and also helps us discover some new music, like this first pick, which came from at mindy's memories and it is waiting on the Summer, by a band called VHS Collection.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, this is a great opening track. I really really like this song a lot. I had not heard of VHS Collection. They sound like a band that I've heard before and I still, to this moment cannot place what band that is, but they sound like a band I've heard before and liked, so that's great. That's not like a bad thing at all, but yeah, I think it's.

Speaker 2:

You know, this song is just kind of a great little capsule of all things that are kind of fun in the summer. You know they sing about getting some color. You know, possibly bleaching your hair if you're into that kind of thing. I have never bleached my hair, but maybe I should have. I don't know, seems like a thing to do. But yeah, I really like it. I think it just has a great summery vibe to it right out of the gate, with those opening like synth notes and everything, and I could definitely see this going and belonging on on a summer mix just like this one yeah, I never had enough hair to bleach, um, so I think I don't know if I would have done it anyway, but that was definitely a problem.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, this I totally agree with you. This was a great opening track too. I'm glad we put this one first because it gets you you know, gets you in the right mood. It's really on the nose. It's just about summer. I like the lyric. The summer comes so slow and moves too fast, and when you're young you don't even know how long it lasts. And I'm kind of experiencing that with my kids, where they're just like this is amazing, you know, like they can't wait for summer, and right now they really do think it's going to last forever. Meanwhile, you know, my wife and I, and probably all the parents out there, just are counting down till, like they're back in school.

Speaker 2:

If it makes you feel any better, I'm counting down with you, but for a different reason. So if you need to commiserate, just send me a text. I got so many, so many countdowns going on all my apps, like all my devices. Oh goodness, that's awesome. No, summertime as a kid is a lot of fun. I think there's something magical about that. Maybe that would help me enjoy it. If I could just get these two and a half months off, I'd probably really enjoy it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's interesting. So you're saying a two and a half month vacation would turn your attitude around about summer.

Speaker 2:

You know, it might, it might, if my boss is listening. Let's give that a shot. Let's try that out.

Speaker 1:

It's worth a try. It's worth a try If we end up with a better summer. Why not, you know?

Speaker 2:

All right, all right Way to steal my sunshine, which is a great introduction to song number two. Just a great summer song. Um, this comes to us by at sm n-a-s-l-u-n-d. I don't know how to pronounce that. If you are, if you can tell me how to pronounce that, that'd be great.

Speaker 1:

Smad nasland I also read it as like two. This is not their first suggestion no, it's like they're. They're a longtime listener. I always read it as sm naslin like I imagine this person's last name is maybe naslin I don't know right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, okay, I'm wrong.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, reveal yourself, listener okay, let us know.

Speaker 2:

Let us know how, how terribly I did so. The song though is uh, steal my sunshine. By Len okay.

Speaker 1:

So I love that this was on here, because the last time we did the songs the summer mix, I believe it was on here as well, and so it got me to thinking about reusing songs on mixtapes, and I don't know if we've ever talked about that, sam, or. But are you someone who, once it's on a mixtape, can't be used again. It forever belongs to that mix and that person? Or are you like, hey, depending on the song and the person and the situation, I'll reuse the song that's a great question.

Speaker 2:

I think I'm more in the first camp. I'm kind of like I've used it and that's it, like it belongs, on that mix and it's no longer in the bucket of songs for me to like pull from. Yeah, what about you?

Speaker 1:

I think it's. If it's for a particular person. If I'm making a mixtape for, like you know, someone in particular, then yeah, probably not going to reuse that one, but if I'm just kind of making my own mixtape or playlist, I feel like I could reuse that song. So, yeah, so you know, we allowed it here. That seal my sunshine pops up again, but it's also just a great summer song. It's got, you know, similar to track one. I think these two kind of blend together really nicely, Kind of in the same vein. And yeah, this one's. I mean, you know I don't again I think I said this a couple years ago can't name another song by Len, but but man, this one stands the test of time I was.

Speaker 2:

I wrote here. I was like let me ask you this, though have you ever listened to anything else len has ever done?

Speaker 1:

what's funny is I I heard vhs collection I was like I think I can get into these guys, like I want to learn more about these guys. Never had that thought with len. It's real weird it is right.

Speaker 2:

I even went to the album that this song is off of and I could have just clicked right. I was one click away. It was just right there, I can't bring myself to do it. I just can't.

Speaker 1:

If you are a hardcore len listener and I'm missing out, please let us know at super awesome yeah, that happened to me with hansen, I think in season one I said said something offhanded about Hanson. We got so many messages and let me tell you those guys were right. I've done a deep dive into Hanson. I'm like, all right, they're good, I'll give it to you.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so prove me wrong.

Speaker 1:

All right. Track three. This is a throwback. It is Ooh Child by the Five Stairsteps.

Speaker 2:

Yes, also coming to us from SM Nasland, I'm going to go with that pronunciation.

Speaker 1:

Let's go with that one.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I like yeah, great, yeah, great throwback song.

Speaker 2:

I think it's also a fantastic summer jam. You know, like just the lyrics of kind of like things are going to get easier, things are going to get brighter, just has like lyrically, that feel of you know summertime and maybe a lightness to that and relaxing, and I just kind of imagine myself driving around with this or heading to the beach listening to this or just like kind of sitting outside, either on a porch or you know wherever that, wherever I might find myself on like a cool summer night after a hot day and just feeling really chill. So I like this. I wouldn't have ever thought of putting a song like this on a summer mix, right, and so that's part of what is really fun about these listener mixes is you just get things of like oh yeah, like that's what you know, someone else is really enjoying this in the summertime. I love that kind of perspective because I never would have thought to like dig this deep back in a timeline to find a song like this. But I think it's a great pick.

Speaker 1:

Totally agree. Yeah, totally unexpected. I definitely knew this song. It's kind of a song I feel like I've always known but couldn't name the artist right. For one. I was like, oh, the five stair steps Definitely didn't pull that.

Speaker 1:

And then what was even more interesting is reading about who they were. I mean, this was a family band. It's five of the six children of Betty and Clarence Burke of Chicago, illinois, and Betty and Clarence Burke were not in the music industry. Wow, and the name came from Betty lining up her kids in age order and thinking it looked like stair steps because they were just about the right spacing height, wise as well. Um, so I thought that was just kind of funny. And then they put out like a good deal of music this is by far their biggest hit and a couple of them went on to like continue to record music after the band broke up. But yeah, I was like it was kind of interesting doing a deep dive into just them because, again, this is a pretty popular song but just not one that you know, never knew much about the band. But yeah, totally agree with you, really fits well here, but definitely not one that I would have pulled. So I mean, that's kind of the magic when we get some of these listener suggestions.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely All right. Track number four, a song I can certainly relate to more than others.

Speaker 1:

This is Summertime Sadness, so this is a yeah, a little bit of a change up, you know, from Vibe, still pretty laid back, as most of Lana Del Rey's music is, but obviously just on title alone, you know, kind of evokes something different. But I think it's appropriate because, you know, even if you're not just super angry about it being hot, like Sammer is, you might be thinking back on some things in the summer, either or from the school year, right, or something like people you miss if you're home from college, or you know, if you're away somewhere in the summer. Yeah, so there could be a hint of sadness there. So, yeah, I thought this was a again kind of similar to the last song, a little bit of a surprising pick, but I think it also works.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I agree, I think you know I'd be curious to hear from the follower that sent this in why they chose this song. But I think it's great. I think you know Lana Del Rey obviously I'm always here for her music. She just has this amazing sultry voice. I think the song obviously is one of her bigger songs, more popular ones that everyone is most likely familiar with. But I love it as I've decided, listening to the song, that there are summer souls and then there are, like winter souls and I would just have a winter soul. So that's that's. You know, that's what I've decided listening to this song.

Speaker 1:

I kind of like that. That might be something you want to expand on. Maybe explore that a little bit more, cause I think you got something there.

Speaker 2:

Nice, nice. Glad to hear that.

Speaker 1:

All right, track five. It is Surfing USA by the Beach Boys.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so this comes to us by an Instagram follower with a handle at top five songs. I believe he goes by the name Matt as well. Who knew there's more than one Matt in the?

Speaker 1:

world. That's weird. That's weird. I've got a pretty unusual name.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, this is obviously an all-time classic Beach Boys song. I feel like it's great, a great summer song, just in the title and the topic, you know, just in the sound. I mean, beach Boys to me definitely are a great summer band across the board. It's like difficult to listen to them and not feel just kind of happy and light and energetic. So absolutely love this. I've never been surfing myself. I just wanted. I don't know why I've never been surfing myself, I just wanted.

Speaker 1:

I don't know why I wanted to tell you that. I just want to tell you that though.

Speaker 2:

You know what? I've never been surfing either. I'm pretty sure I'd be terrible at it if I tried it. I think so too. I've heard it's pretty difficult.

Speaker 1:

I've heard it's pretty difficult so.

Speaker 2:

I can barely snowboard and, like the ground, is just sitting there when I'm on a board right, so I can't imagine trying to stand on a surfboard with waves underneath me. I just don't see that going very well.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I've never even tried snowboarding so I don't even know how that would go, but probably I don't know, probably not well at this point in my life, right, I feel like that's something that you got to get going early and kind of stretch out those muscles.

Speaker 2:

Right right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but yeah, going back to the song here, you know Matt C sent us a note when he made the suggestion and was like you know, the Beach Boys could probably have their own Sounds of Summer mix, like they could occupy. I mean, there's so many choices here when it comes to them. But yeah, surfing USA is perfect. Them and a lot of bands in this era did a lot of kind of quote unquote surf music, so there's probably plenty of other songs around this time that we could have picked up too. I also think about the movie Teen Wolf when I hear this song. Sam, are you familiar with Teen Wolf?

Speaker 2:

I've heard the title. I've never watched it, oh my God. But look, I'm scarred by you and Jen sending me movies to watch.

Speaker 1:

Okay, st Elmo's Fire may not have been the best 80s movie for you to watch, but Teen Wolf is definitely something you should. Here's the thing about some of these movies, sam. They're not great, right, like in the sense that I'm not sitting there going. Look at one best picture in 1985. Right, it's like, no, it's not, and there's a lot of flaws in it, but I kind of want you to watch it, okay. So, again, this just continues to add fuel to the fire of like the sammer's got to watch these movies and react to them and then I got to defend them. Right, like that's got that might be its own show that could be.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that definitely could be all right, I won't get into the teen wolf reference here, but just the people out there who know. I mean, they know what I'm talking about. So, uh, all right. Track six it is island in the sun by Weezer. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, another one coming to us from at Top 5 Songs. Thank you, matt, for all the recommendations. This one, obviously I had to pick this one. It is a classic Weezer song, a classic summer vibe song. I just think you know Weezer also is just a band that I very much put in that bucket of easy kind of listening to. I think I listen to them a lot in the summer. They just kind of belong in that season and it's funny because, you know, a couple years ago, as we talked about on the show, they also did an entire like album broken apart by seasons, and they had a summer season one. Um, I don't remember what that one sounded like, to be honest, they all just sounded like Weezer songs, right, like. So I don't, I don't know. It didn't leave that strong of an impression on me, but this one definitely works, especially with the, the subject matter and the title.

Speaker 1:

So great pick agree, this has got a real cool like low-key vibe. I mean kind of like a lot of the songs, I think, on this mix, but it's, uh, got that weezer filter to it so it definitely sounds like Weezer, but yeah, I mean it's. It's a great one, you know, and I love the line. It makes me feel so fine, I can't control my brain yes, that's an awesome one, all right.

Speaker 2:

Moving on to another suggestion from a longtime listener, this is Life is a Highway, by Tom Cochran.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and this is at Dado3girls, who I think this is another one we had trouble with.

Speaker 1:

I think the first time we read his name and then I kind of sussed out it was oh, he's got three daughters, I think. I think that's where it comes from. Anyway, dave's been a longtime listener and he actually gives us the next two suggestions and they're both Canadian, which is uh, and they're both pretty awesome. To be honest with you, um, this was a song that was a huge when it came out, I think in the early 90s, and it's been remade a couple times.

Speaker 1:

There's a country version out there by Chris Ledoux and then Rascal Flatts remade it for the movie Cars, and so that's how my kids kind of get came to know it is through like rascal flats, and rascal flats pretty much does like a beat for beat recreation, like there's just nothing new about it. When they did it, um, but you know, my kids immediately got into it and like it'd come on the radio, they'd be like, oh, yeah, yeah, this is the song. Whether it was the tom cochran version or the rascal flats version, they just immediately, immediately recognized, which I think speaks to kind of a unique quality of a song that like no matter you know who remakes it over time, like it just kind of catches on with people.

Speaker 1:

Um, yeah but but this is a great one. It's got a great spirit. I thought it was also cool to read like kind of the background about it, because Tom Cochran was like on kind of a mission trip and and this song sort of came to him and and just thinking about, um, you know just all the stuff in the world and how you got to kind of work through everything, the good and the bad. So I don't know, I think reading about that kind of gave me, you know, some new life with this song, Cause I feel like I've heard it a million times.

Speaker 2:

That is really cool yeah. I love whenever, whenever you read about the meaning of a song and it gives a new, new energy and a new perspective to listen to it. But I totally agree with this being a song of summer. I really like this recommendation to to go on. The mix Also features harmonica, which, like I love you know. If, again, if you're a longtime listener, you know I love a good harmonica. It's hard to be upset when you're listening to someone playing a harmonica.

Speaker 2:

Like it's just a happy instrument. And then, of course, now because I'm a millennial, I will always associate this with the scene in the office Whenever they're doing like a road trip with Holly and Daryl. They're moving Holly down to a new city and they have this song on repeat, basically, and they keep trying to get the solo part down. But then the best part is when he just starts to break down crying in the middle of it or something oh my god, great. And Daryl's just like on the phone, like trying to call someone. Please call me back. It's a classic scene and I will always associate this song with that scene.

Speaker 1:

Now so that's a great call. Yeah, no, without a doubt. Um, that's, that's a great one, and I can't imagine how many takes they did on that one and just dying laughing and I wonder how tired they got as actors of that song.

Speaker 1:

Right, it was just on repeat over and over again it's one of those things like the extended scenes in family guy, where it's like. It probably is like oh I love this song, oh I can't hear this song again, and then it kind of gets past that point, comes back around and it's like you love it again.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, definitely definitely all right track.

Speaker 1:

Eight, our second suggestion from at data three girls.

Speaker 2:

He gives us patio lanterns by kim mitchell yeah, this is a really cool, really cool pick. I did not know this song but I really enjoyed it and I just think I could definitely see this being a summer vibe song. Love the idea of the patio lanterns right In my head. I'm immediately envisioning myself sitting outside on a cool summer night. You're maybe outdoor in a space where they've got those like patio lanterns like hanging, or you've got like the, the like Christmas lights hanging. They have a different name, like just twinkle lights, basically something you know something to, where you have this like nice little light in the sky and you're just enjoying being outside and enjoying kind of the long days and taking things a little bit slow. And so I just really, really liked this pick. I think it's one where I can definitely just travel in my mind to a different place, no matter where I'm at. So great, great pick and one that I was really happy to be introduced to.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'm 100% with you, had not heard this song or this artist. Kim Mitchell's now 71 years old and so he's got a lot of music behind him. So I'm really interested to kind of get into it, because I love this song. It was just such great storytelling. It wasn't crass, it wasn't overly emotional, it wasn't like trying to tug at heartstrings, it was just like, hey, here's a scene and everybody can kind of relate to it in some way, shape or form form. So I just thought it was really well done. Yeah, really glad to to get introduced to that. So now we've got sammer's two picks and then we're going to get into my two picks. Okay, so I'll introduce sammer's two picks and then he will introduce my two picks. So last four picks on our sounds of summer, volume two, track nine, you picked quesadilla by walk the moon.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so this one is on here because it is imprinted in my mind was summer of 2015. I went to the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, otherwise known as WWDC. They do this every year, obviously before COVID. It was much more of an in-person event. So I flew out to San Francisco and you know, they launched, I think, that year, apple Music and a bunch of other new cool things, and it was a really, really fun experience. It's certainly one of the nerdier things I've ever done in my life, which was so fun.

Speaker 2:

But you know, they obviously also offer some entertainment options along the way, and so one of the nights of that week they had Block the Moon come and perform outside in like an open park space, so they did like an outdoor concert and they were great, and that was actually one of my first introductions to a band, and I've always thought it was really unique to be introduced to a band with their live music rather than hearing them like on a radio or, you know, just listening to them on your iPod at the time or whatever.

Speaker 2:

So I really enjoyed their energy, I thought they had a great set, and so this song really reminds me of that time, which is why it's like a song of summer and I just think in general, like that album and this band has kind of this great, energetic, you know, summery sound. They remind me a lot of like you know, phoenix, for example. I would listen to them and Phoenix and put them on the same album or foster to the people Most of their songs when they're not singing about tragic, horrible things really work very well together. So yeah, that's why I have this song here.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, foster the People Usually, yeah in a pretty good mood. Then they watched Dateline late one night and wrote this one song and that was their biggest hit.

Speaker 1:

And that was their biggest hit, yeah, um, but yeah, this is, this is. I was not familiar with the song but, um, I thought it really worked. I even not knowing like kind of the connection that you had to it, um, just hearing it as a standalone I thought it really fit with the summer and just kind of thinking back on on kind of memories of sort of a, a summer fling, it reminded me of like a less problematic version of the song Summer Lovin' from Grease, which you know, like it also got me thinking problematic songs could be a mix of its own, so that may be coming later this year, just songs where, if you really dig in the lyrics, like we really shouldn't be singing.

Speaker 2:

Right and endless picks for that one Endless.

Speaker 1:

Endless. But yeah, no, I really like this one and definitely kind of a good feel and a good fit with this mix.

Speaker 2:

Nice.

Speaker 1:

And your second pick, and I mean I don't think anyone's going to question why this is on here. Track 10, it Is Good Feeling by Flo Rida yeah.

Speaker 2:

So this one, funny enough, um, came back into my headspace because I'm re-watching Silicon Valley with my wife. She'd never seen the show and in the first season, uh, peter Gregory, who's like the eccentric billionaire who funds the company and, you know, has like a fundraising event and he invites florida to come on stage, which I mean. Up until that point I had never moved the two words together and realized that they spelled florida, right, like you're like, oh yeah, flow, right, like that's great. Um, so that kills me.

Speaker 2:

But you know he played this song in that show and I was like, oh right, this song, this is a great song, like super high energy. Um, very, very easy to listen to, just kind of a pop rap, you know, type song, great lyrics as well. You know I got power, feel so royal and got adrenaline, never given in and obviously that really wonderful sample of good feeling like riding throughout the, throughout the entire song. So just a feel good song all the way around. I think they nailed it and that's why I wanted to put this on the summer mix.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, great, call this song. I also love thinking about how much money Flo Rida makes just on an annual basis just from this one song. Right, right, it's in movies, it's in commercials, like it's everywhere. So good on flowrider for creating just like kind of an ultimate sort of hit like this, and he's got a ton of songs like that. So he's kind of perfect for a songs of summer type mix or a feel-good mix, because he's just got so many songs where you know that's that's really the message and that's the vibe. So, yeah, I had, I had no doubts about this one showing up. I was like great, great pick.

Speaker 2:

We could do like a Flo Rida versus Beach Boys mix. Who does it better? That would be interesting actually that would be.

Speaker 1:

Let's write that idea down. That's a good one.

Speaker 2:

That is All right. So, as Matt mentioned, the last two picks are going to be his and your first one, track number 11, is ghetto superstar. This is what you are by pros yeah, this is a.

Speaker 1:

This is one that I don't know. Every time I hear this song, like I'll forget about it for a while. Then it'll pop on, like whether it's serious xm or just you know random movie I'm watching, whatever it is and I'm like god, this is a great song. Okay, so it's's from summer in 98. So that's why I thought of it like summer wise, because, like I was in college at that time and I just I remember hearing it just all summer. They sample the song Islands in the Stream, which was a big hit in the 80s, written by Barry Gibb, and it was a duet sung by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Right, so, of course, 15 years later, it's going to be sampled as a rap song. Right, like just hearing those names.

Speaker 1:

That's immediately what you think of.

Speaker 2:

Yes, but it's just.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, just a great song, great beat. They do a really good job actually with the sampling and it was used in this movie, bullworth, which I'm like 100% certain you've never seen or heard of Samer, right? Okay, so it's in this vein of like quote unquote smart comedies, right, has anyone ever described to you a comedy as like oh, it's a really smart comedy and I feel like they're setting you up for like not laughing for two hours and then if you come back and be like yeah, I didn't care for it, it, then you're kind of admitting you're dumb through that you know exactly, it's a trap.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's a trap.

Speaker 1:

So I remember people describing bulworth as kind of a smart comedy. But I remember watching it and I was like I don't, am I into this? Like I don't know if I want to watch this and it's not streaming anywhere, so you'd have to pay to watch it and I don't recommend you pay for it. But that's just me. But if you, you know, hit us up at soup broth mix. If I'm wrong about bulworth and I need to go re-watch that, please let me know.

Speaker 2:

But I'm pretty sure I'm not that's how I feel about a majority of new yorker cartoons. Right, like, some of them are pretty good, but a lot of them you're like what, like, why, what?

Speaker 1:

well, that was the uh, I mean amazing seinfeld episode where elaine's just searching for meaning in the new yorker cartoon and everyone's like trying to fake laugh because they don't want to be the one who's like I don't get it exactly right, exactly, um, no, but on the song great, great pick.

Speaker 2:

I mean just a classic hip-hop song. Um, definitely belongs here on the summer mix Just has a great vibe. It also made me realize, like you know, especially being part of Super Awesome Mix, I try to keep a very open mind about music and I'm trying to do that with more recent hip hop and rap songs. But when you, when you put something new that has just come out, compared to like this song, it is really hard to pick the new song because, like classic hip-hop is just so good, it's so good. So that's all I'm gonna say there I, I'm, I'm with you.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to sound like old man like you you've corrected me on that before when I'm kind of like I don't think I get this and you're like, yeah, well let's not, you know, and I'm like'm like you're right, you're right, Okay, let's power through it. But yeah, sometimes I'm like man, I just I don't get it. I don't get it.

Speaker 2:

I don't get it. I don't either. All right, well, you could say that you took the words right out of my mouth, which is, and that is, by Meatloaf.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and in parentheses, it's Hot Summer Night. So I mean it's right there in the title, right, why wouldn't we include this? But yeah, I mean, anytime I get a chance to celebrate Meatloaf's work, I'm going to, just because I really like it. It's about a five-minute song. So I always give the warning whenever it's a Meatloaf song that you may think this would be good for karaoke, but to Meat Loaf song that you may think this would be good for karaoke but it's not and you're not going to do a good job of it and you're going to lose energy and you're going to lose the audience. Okay, so I'm just telling you right now please don't go out there and sing a Meat Loaf song on karaoke night.

Speaker 1:

But I mean, his songs are amazing. They're almost like operatic and kind of musical in their presentation, like musical being like from a musical. But yeah, I mean, and I also love in this one and it's pretty repetitive, but I love the continuation from the title. The title is you took the words right out of my mouth and then it continues. It must have been while you were kissing me.

Speaker 1:

That's like that's really good. That's a really good title and there's also some weird spoken word stuff in there about werewolves and all this other stuff. But who knows, you might be into that, like you may be something that appeals to you in some way, but I don't know. Thought it was a perfect song and a perfect opportunity to. I can't think of another mix where I would include this song.

Speaker 2:

I don't know either. I will say I was really freaked out by the opening spoken word part. I hit play and I was like what is happening? Is this some weird Shakespearean thing that they're pulling from? And then it just kept going on and on, it does.

Speaker 1:

It's a solid minute.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, like what is happening. I was so turned off by it that it was really hard for me to enjoy the rest of the song. But I and I feel like in my research I'm not alone in that I feel like a lot of people were like Don't really like the introduction to this song, but it's fine like the introduction to this song, um, but it's fine, you know, it's kind of, it's kind of a smart introduction that's the thing, so I mean I get it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you know, it's not for me, I get it I'm gonna go yeah, yeah, no, it's cool, it's cool, no that's great.

Speaker 2:

Rude, um, yeah, no, I mean, I I know your love for meatloaf and I. I think it's great, especially whenever I still remember when I didn't realize that that was him and Fight Club. So I will never live that down in my mind. I won't let that go.

Speaker 1:

Hey, by the way, I also love the meal, meatloaf. So I mean, if anybody's out there just like has a great meatloaf recipe, I mean send that in at super awesome mix, I wouldn't mind.

Speaker 2:

Wouldn't mind a new one, yeah be sure to tag matt on that one, because he's alone between the two of us on that.

Speaker 1:
