Super Awesome Mix

Matt's Best of 2025!

Super Awesome Mix Season 5 Episode 48

This week Matt brings his 12 best songs of 2025 to the mix and Sam helps him count them down.

We start by turning chaos into rhythm—yes, we joke about measuring chores in “Bruno Mars minutes”—and then dig into the textures that made this list sing. Inhaler brings that recognizable lineage without slipping into pastiche, while Jon Batiste crossfades jazz, soul, R&B, and hip‑hop into one irresistible lift. Raekwon reminds us the music video still matters when artists build worlds worth rewatching, and Julian Baker sharpens the edges of love with metaphors that cut and comfort at once. The Minus 5 becomes this year’s deep‑dive rabbit hole, a catalog made for holiday listening sprees.

David Byrne, Ghost Train Orchestra, and Hayley Williams pose a deceptively simple question—what is the reason for it?—and answer it with arrangement, rhythm, and surprise. Bad Bunny’s “Nueva Yol” doubles as a love letter to New York and a case study in performance as gateway; go watch the SNL set and tell us it doesn’t hook you. ROLE MODEL’s viral “Sally” bit shows how smart stagecraft fuels repeat plays, while Eric Church centers the theme that ties the hour together: music as a time machine, stitching memories with melodies. Counting Crows deliver a classic storyteller’s arc about becoming, and Kacey Musgraves closes the book with a vow that cuts through the noise: if everything falls apart, you were it.

Come back next week to hear Sam's Top 12 of 2025!!

SPEAKER_02:

Welcome back to another Super Awesome Mix. My name is Matt Sid Home alongside my co-host and co-founder of Super Awesome Mix, Sam Abusalbi. Sam, how are we doing this week?

SPEAKER_03:

Um, you know, doing real well overall. Uh as I mentioned on a previous recording, of course, I have a newborn at home. Um, and this morning, I got closer than I would like to admit to putting raw eggs in the toaster rather than bread in the toaster. Trying to make eggs and toast. And that's how that went.

SPEAKER_02:

Nothing, if you're not going to go through like Navy SEAL training, nothing really kind of tests, nothing gives you a feel for how uh sleep deprivation can affect you, like a newborn, right? Like it's it's stuff like that where it's like, wow. Although I am interested to see how it would do on a toaster, a raw egg.

SPEAKER_03:

That exactly. That was my next thought. I was like, you know, maybe, maybe someone's tried this, maybe no one has, and maybe this is how we end up with like the next big thing, you know. So here, you know, we're here to to round out uh your year in music, which is uh amazing 2025, uh another end-of-the-year mix uh for you. You've chosen 12 of your favorite best songs of the year, in in your humble opinion, of course. Um very humble opinion, thank you.

SPEAKER_02:

Very humble. Thank you for knowing how humble I am. I also remind you how humble I am.

SPEAKER_03:

The humblest, really.

SPEAKER_02:

Um some say, some say the humblest, yep. Uh so yeah, this is my best of. This is uh 12 songs I I have included on new music mixes throughout the year. So they're all songs that came out in 2025. And uh I went ahead and put them in order from like 12 to 1 to kind of my number one song, which was which was kind of hard. And I there was so much great new music, and there was even a couple like late entries uh into the mix this year where I was like, oh, and so I I hadn't included a lot of new music mix, but maybe I should include that. And um, you know, didn't end up doing it. So these are all songs you've probably heard before if you've been following along all year, but um yeah, excited to to get through this.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, this is one of my favorite mixes that we do each year. It's really fun to kind of go back through, especially because as we've talked about before on previous episodes, I forget that songs came out this year, right? Like I it's crazy to go back to like those January, February new music mixes and be like, oh wow, like that feels like a lifetime ago. And in fact, it did actually come out this year. Um, so that's pretty wild. Um, but with that, let's get into it. Your uh first pick on the mix, which is your 12th favorite song of the year, and that's Bon de Brunau by Bruno Mars.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, when I went through all the new music I brought to the show, I kind of included this one. It's a short song, it's like maybe two minutes long, right? And not even, it's actually one minute. Yeah, it's one minute long. But the energy packed in that one minute, I was like, I just kept coming back to it. And I was like, I the more I was like, no, let me think of this, or wow, look at the lyrics on this one. But then I was just like, yeah, but I can't, I can't not present this one as like, man, everyone just listen to this on a loop when you've got to do some sort of task and see how many listens through it it takes before you can kind of finish it up because it is it's just awesome. I think it's just an instant mood booster, and um, I don't know, I I just love it, even though it is just one one amazing minute long.

SPEAKER_03:

I really like the idea of measuring efficiency by how many times you can get through this song. So then you as a as like a household or a team could be like, yeah, that's gonna just take a six bonded brunes. Like that's no problem for us. That's right.

SPEAKER_02:

It becomes a unit of time.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, exactly. That's perfect. That's perfect. No, I agree. It's a very high-energy song. Um, and it is funny that it's actually clocked in at exactly 57 seconds. So a little bit under a minute. A little bit under a minute. Those three seconds are just paid.

SPEAKER_02:

Still gets paid on those streams, though. You gotta love that.

SPEAKER_03:

Still gets paid. That's amazing. Yeah, all righty. Um, well, well, let's go on to your second track, number 11 on 2025. This is your house by inhaler.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, so to remind people, inhaler is an Irish rock band, and their front man is Elijah Hewson. And uh, he's the son of Paul Hewson, who's better known as Bono from U2. Um, and I really liked their music even before knowing that, right? I heard a couple songs, I was like, oh, this is kind of cool. But once I heard that connection, I was immediately like, I just heard Bono, like while he was singing. And not a complete like copycat, but just like you just hear elements of it. And so it's really cool. Now it's different enough to where, and I know there's some people out there who don't like U2. If you don't like U2, you can listen to this and you still get into it. It's not like this is just, you know, some replica of U2. Um, but at the same time, if you love U2, it's actually kind of cool because it's like hearing a younger version of Bono's voice. Um, so it's almost like this Bizarro Universe version of U2 in a way. Uh so it's it's really neat. Um, and this was kind of a moderate hit from them. This is the new their new album this year was called Open Wide. Uh, but like I said, I mean, I think they're worth digging into if you like just good rock music. It is just like kind of straight ahead rock music. Um and yeah, uh I'm I'm a big fan of them and I'm excited to see how they continue to evolve.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, absolutely. Um, it's funny, I had forgotten all of that about the connection to U2, and I'm I started listening to the song again. I was like, oh my God, they sound just like U2. Like, this is wild. Um I was like, look, and they're from Dublin and everything. Like, wow, like they must have been really inspired by U2 music.

SPEAKER_02:

Influenced by U2 in some way, shape, or form.

SPEAKER_03:

Um, but you're right, it's got this really fun, like boppy feel to it. It's really nice. It's a good song, it's a good solid song, um, regardless of the of the you know, potentially Nepo baby thing that's going on here, being the son of Bono. It might be a little bit easier for you to produce and release music, but he's got talent. He's got talent. It's not it's not a bad song.

SPEAKER_02:

And apparently he kind of withheld that from his bandmates for a little bit, which I think is hilarious that it's like you're the struggling band, and then it's like, all right, guys, I didn't want to do this, but uh, I don't know, my dad might be able to help out, you know. Oh. Dad got a couple bucks, or he win the lotto. What's it? Oh, uh his it's Bono. Yeah, my dad's Bono.

SPEAKER_03:

It turns out he's one of the largest most recognized international musicians in the world.

SPEAKER_00:

But you know, just yeah, we we could be on tour next week. Yeah, it's cool. So just uh everyone would rest easy tonight.

SPEAKER_03:

That's awesome. Um well, you know, I guess it would be easy for them to chase that big money, which is your next track, number 10 of the year, and that's Big Money by John Batiste.

SPEAKER_02:

I think that's one of your best segues of the year, right there. That was excellent. Thank you.

SPEAKER_03:

Thank you.

SPEAKER_02:

Um, all right, Big Money. This is from his new album of the same name. Uh, this one, I mean, similar to uh, you know, the Bruno Mars track, I kind of just got sucked in just from the opening notes of this one, like just kind of pulling you in, like great energy. I mean, he's normally in like a jazz and soul category, but it I think he even does some crossover into like RB and hip-hop. And I just love all the genres that play in this one. Uh the lyrics are great, you know. You can buy a song, but it doesn't mean you can sing, you can win it all but lose everything, uh, all these different contrasts and stuff. And um, I don't know. So just from an energy standpoint, I think this one's awesome. Also, just lyrically and musically, like there's just so many cool things happening in the song. So I had to include it on the uh best of here.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, we we've talked about him before. I saw him, I mentioned that I saw him in concert, and he's just as high energy in concert as he is on every track. Like you can tell this is a man that loves what he does, right? And I think that that just comes through in every single line of his music, every single instrument. Like he's he's he's truly a musician 100% through and through. Like that man can do anything up on stage and it's incredible. Um, and yeah, this is just like a really fun song. I think it's one of my favorites of the year, and certainly one of my favorites out of your 12 here uh to round out the year. He's uh he's a really fun, infectious like artist uh to listen to. So if you haven't gotten into him yet, I I definitely say like click around. You're you're bound to find something to your point of him just being very cross-genre. You're bound to find a song by him that you're like, oh wow, like this is awesome. I I like this, so it's really nice. All right, let's go on to your number nine. This is uh Bear Hill by Raekwon.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, Raekwon of the Wu Tang clan. Uh his first new album since 2017 called The Emperor's New Clothes. Um, and this whole album was just, I don't know, it was great. Like it was actually kind of hard for me to pick out one song, but I I picked this one, and um, I think what's cool about it, one, it's just it's just a cool song to listen to, right? But uh what's also neat is they really put a lot of time into the music video. So if you go to YouTube and watch a music video, he's like literally turning into a beast entering this rap battle. And so it's it's really cool. And uh, I mean, I think I said this at the time when we were talking about it, but like the music video used to be a huge deal, right? Just because MTV was so big. So you really wanted to put something together that would be watchable and re-watchable and something people would want to, you know, watch over and over again. And then there was sort of that uh TRL era where people could kind of vote on their favorite songs and stuff like that. So, you know, you wanted something people wanted to watch, and I feel like there's probably less of that now with music videos, but they are still out there on YouTube, and uh so it's cool to come across one where they clearly put a lot of effort into making this great video, and and I'm sure YouTube is like obviously it's it's huge and and you can make a ton of money off that off streams, and so people are still kind of focused on it, but it's just not as in front of your face as maybe MTV was.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I I was thinking about that. I think YouTube is probably like the modern day MTV in a way, because that's like the best and probably only way people consume uh full music videos. Of course, we've got like TikTok and Instagram reels and stuff where you can get like clips of stuff, um which I'm sure a lot of artists are I know a lot of artists are pressured into making things that go viral on on social media now. Like that's another element of their job that they didn't really have before, which is fascinating. So um, but yeah, this is an amazing song. I mean, classic hip-hop sound, you know, um obviously like with the roots of being from U-Tang clan, that makes a lot of sense. And it's just yeah, a great kind of amp up song. I feel like it's got that pre-game, you know, which i is perfect for the music video. Obviously, it's like gearing up, getting ready. Um, so just a really good way to get yourself um to go take on whatever you're gonna tackle, you know, from from a rap battle to opening up a really large Excel data sheet and working your way through a financial model, you know? Why not?

SPEAKER_02:

Whatever, whatever battles in front of you. You're 100% right, Sam. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, exactly, exactly. Hey, some of those, some of those Excel files, they take a minute to load, you know, they take a while.

SPEAKER_02:

They do. No, you're right. You're right. They really do. You need you need some free, you need some free RAM. No doubt.

SPEAKER_03:

All right, let's go on to the fifth song in the mix. This is number eight of the year. It's Sugar in the Tank by Julian Baker and Torres.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, we have talked about uh Julian Baker and Lucy Bacchus are both part of Boy Genius, and um we have talked uh about them before. This is a solo work by Julian Baker. Her album from this year was called Send a Prayer My Way. Uh, she's from Memphis, but I don't think she's really considered country. But I think this this could be considered uh tangentially country. I don't know if you rated it on your country scale or not, Sam. Did you did it, did it rate at all?

SPEAKER_03:

It did not, no, because um I did write that it was a country-esque sound, but it's possibly folksy, and so I kind of couldn't give it a proper rating. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

I love it. Okay, no, that's great. That's great. I I like I wasn't sure like if it would get you know Doctepeg because uh it was uh it was a little too country. So that's great.

SPEAKER_03:

There is a song coming up later on the mix that is absolutely country that has a rating that we'll get into, but this one is not.

SPEAKER_02:

I look forward to that. I look forward to that. Good. Um, but yeah, this is a really cool song. Um, you know, the line from the chorus I'll call out. You're sitting outside with the engine running, waiting on me to change, which can literally be an experience, but also kind of also figuratively, like you're just kind of sitting outside. You you want someone to maybe change who they are or change in some way. So I I like the double meaning there. Um this song kind of highlights, you know, the stubbornness and sometimes kind of meanness that gets in relationships, but it could still kind of work. And that's that, you know, sugar in the tank, if you will, that could just, you know, if you pour sugar in your gas tank, it's not gonna be good for the car. But uh there's also sweetness to it. So I don't know. Uh clever title, clever lyrics, and and just really well done overall.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, it it definitely has kind of this like edginess to it, you know, like even the lines like I love you tied up on the train tracks, um, I love you sleeping on my dead left arm, you know, because it's like it's sweet. I love you sleeping there, but also you've made my arm like completely dead. So it's like it's it definitely has like an edginess to it, which I really like. Yeah. Uh but of course two beautiful voices on this track as well. Um, but yeah, it's just a really, really nice song. And like I said, it's for me, it's skew is more folksy, but it definitely has like a country-esque vibe to it. Um, but really nice track overall. All right, number seven of the year. We're getting close to the top five here, and this is Words and Birds by the Minus Five.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, so the Minus Five was probably the band I I maybe did a deep dive into the most this year. They've actually been around since 1993, but I just discovered them this year. So they actually have several albums. Um, this is Scott Mackay of Young Fresh Fellows, and he's working with Peter Buck, who many people may know from REM. And so um, it was originally those two with uh John R and Ken Stringfellow of the Posies, and so that was the original foursome, but now it's just down to uh those first two. But they just have kind of this unique sound that I don't know, just really like I just got into immediately. And and this song is literally about birds and and words, and um, you know, a lot of people have differing opinions about birds out there, but I I just think this band, the minus five, has a really cool sound. Like I said, I did a deep dive into their back catalog, and I was just as entertained and kind of taken in by their earlier work as well. So, you know, this is kind of cool. The holidays are coming up, you know, a lot of podcasts are going on reruns, right? So if you want to do a deep dive into some bands, I think this is a cool band to get into and just listen to some albums from the past.

SPEAKER_03:

That is um, it's an incredible background, like musical background. Uh for me, I think I may have said this before. I have a vague memory of listening to them, but they sounded almost like they might be giants, which is a similar sound to like REM and posies in a way, you know, just kind of this. And I think especially the subject matters, singing about birds, you know, like I feel like that's something you would hear from a band in the 90s. Yeah. Um, but no, it's just got this like great classic alt-rock sound. Um, and it I love the opening notes, it's a really nice energy to kick off the song, and and um this is a great pick, absolutely. I have not done a deep dive myself, but maybe I will because this is a fun, fun track. All right, number six on the year. This actually might be my favorite out of all of your picks here. Um, I loved this song. This is What is the Reason for It by David Byrne and Ghost Train Orchestra, and it features Haley Williams.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, I mean, the album's called What Is the Sky, which is also just a great title from David Byrne. Um, yeah, I mean, this one, I think this one moved up and down the list quite a bit, like because I was like, oh, I gotta put it here. No, let me move it up one, whatever. And honestly, I could have put stuff from this whole album. I thought this whole album was just incredible. Um, but yeah, this one just from the beginning kind of sucks you in. I think this is the opening track, and I just love how lyrically it's just about love and why it exists. Like, what is the reason for it? Like, and and it's just this cool sort of philosophical exploration of it, um, set to this amazing rhythm in the background, and you know, it it sounds great and the vocals are awesome. I don't know, just everything about this I just loved. Uh, but it's just kind of classic David Byrne, where you you don't think this stew is gonna come together and taste good, but but it does.

SPEAKER_03:

That's that's a great way to describe that. Um, for me, like the top comment on the page when I was reading the lyrics was like, wait, this is awesome. And that's exactly how I felt because when I started it, I was like, you know, it's got a strong opening, but I'm not so sure. Like it was like a little weird. Um, and then it just keeps like unfolding in a way, and then like the different verses and Haley Williams verses, and you're just like, wait, I love this song, like I want to listen to it again and again and again. Um, so that was my experience. So if if you're like me and you hear kind of the first 10-15 seconds, just stick with it, like you're gonna love it. Um, I I imagine, but it also has like a fits in the tantrum feel to it a little bit, and I think it just has that like hand clapping energy. I feel like in my head, you know, um in my head, like as we've discussed, they literally have a song called Hand Clap. They're they're like the ultimate hand clap band. Um they are so this just has that kind of vibe to it. It's like very energetic and fun, but I really liked this song. This was awesome. All right, um, number eight on the mix, and this is number five of the year, potentially a controversial pick given everything that's happening around this musician. Um this is Nueva Yol by the one and only Bad Bunny.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, in our effort to become part of the mainstream media, I decided to go really woke and include a Bad Bunny song.

SPEAKER_03:

I couldn't even read the lyrics, Matt. What are you doing? I had no idea what he was singing.

SPEAKER_02:

I kept shouting, English, speak English. Um gosh. So I mentioned videos earlier. Go to YouTube and watch the uh Saturday Night Live performance of this song because he hosted and was a musical guest earlier this year, and he did it, and it was uh it was awesome. And that's kind of what just sucked me into that song was just watching that performance and then just listen to it a couple more times on its own, and you know, entirely in Spanish, but they're having a great time. I mean, it's kind of a love letter to New York if you if you do a little translation there. Um, he's from Puerto Rico. Um, I it's I don't know. Yeah, I just think it sounded great, and and I got into the rest of his new album, and that sounded pretty cool. I I think he's going to put on a a great show at the Super Bowl uh in February. And I think it's just going to be a lot of fun. And I don't think there's going to be a whole lot of controversy as everyone wants you to believe on either side that that it's it's going to be good or bad. It's just going to be really entertaining, is what it is. And then we're going to go back to football. That's that's what's going to happen.

SPEAKER_03:

Right. There's obviously a lot of discussion about this online, but I feel like the halftime show, people always say that it was like it um there's a concert and it just happens to be in the middle of a football game, right? Like basically people tune in to watch this show and then immediately turn it back off again. It is, it's become its own entity. It's not even about football or who picked it, whatever. It's just it, I feel it is just a standalone concert. And I think it's gonna be great. It's gonna be really, really fun. And um, they always go really big with it, as we know. So I agree. I think his music is very high energy, regardless of what he's thinking about, and it'll be a lot of fun. All right, number four on the mix. We are getting close to the top three now, and this is Sally When the Wine Runs Out by Role Model.

SPEAKER_02:

Uh, so this is this was a big pop hit this year. Um, yeah, role model, it's just one guy, Tucker Pillsbury is his name. He's from a small town in Maine. Uh, and I lived in Maine for three years, and uh let me tell you, it's uh it's real rural up there. Um so yeah, I mean, I don't know. It it's cool that I also it's I also think it's cool when someone comes out of the state of Maine now that I've lived there for a few years, because it's just like, man, what was that guy's childhood like? Like there's just nothing around here, you know. Um but this song, um, I don't know, I feel like it was kind of everywhere this year. And um he even had some cool videos because at concerts he would bring out a new Sally, and it would be like various celebrities coming out and joining him. And when he did it on Saturday Night Live, it was Charlie XCX who came out there and danced around a little bit. Um, so it's a pretty cool bit that he's got going there because obviously it's fun if you're at the concert, but also cool if you just check out the videos later. So so good for him. Um, but I just think this is kind of a fun song, and and he's just sitting there singing about like, hey, I'll buy a couple drinks. Hey, this is going somewhere, and then it's like, wait, are you just gonna leave me once once I'm done buying you drinks? And uh I I don't know. So thematically it's fun and it just sounds great. And uh, you know, the whole bit with the new Sally every time I think is a really cool bit as well.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, that is really fun. I um I love that. I think this um like for me, the lyrics almost were even just about a relationship that only lasts when you're drinking, right? And then it's less about even just like that she's gonna leave whenever you stop buying her drinks, but it's truly just like some relationships are just like, well, we're drunk, like let's you know, be together, that type thing. That's kind of what it rang for me, but it was a really nice song, uh nice little fun song. And I didn't know that about the like guest star Sally. I think that's a really smart marketing move, right? Like doing something like that, because then you you can kind of always get a burst of um kind of virality or something, depending on on who you get to come out on stage. So I really like that idea.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, oh, it's brilliant. I mean, you know, uh if you're watching like Saturday Night Live, I think that was part of the anticipation when he was going to be on there, was just like, well, who could pop out? Because you know, on SNL, like you never know who's gonna show up, right?

SPEAKER_03:

So yeah, that's awesome. Nice. Um, all right, number three. This is your tenth um track on the mix, but number three on the year, here we go. This is Hands of Time by Eric Church.

SPEAKER_02:

And this is definitely a country song, okay.

SPEAKER_03:

Um can confirm.

SPEAKER_02:

Um, I I love this one, and it was one, I think it came out early in the year. I want to say it was like on the March New Music mix or something, but I just kept coming back to it. It's just a really I and I think given what we do on this show, which is you know, kind of mark time with music and and talk about music that came out and music that fits certain themes, and the whole lyrics of this is about how music just kind of whatever state of mind he's in, music can sort of transport him, you know, to to sort of lean into that or get out of that or or whatever it is. Um and and in this case, kind of act as a time machine, taking him back to a time and place and invoking those memories. So um I just love this and and the way I also appreciate it when songwriters can put together other song titles together in a way that sounds coherent, and it's kind of what he does with the choruses here. Um so yeah, I don't know. Just uh love this song and and you know it's off a really uh good new album from him. Um he's always been a good songwriter, but uh this one was a good standout for me.

SPEAKER_03:

So all of what you just said is absolutely beautiful and sounds lovely. Um, moving on. Okay, that's it. Next, next song. I I I couldn't hear any of that because my country alarms went ringing in my head, and I was like immediate one out of ten, just immediately. Like, it is so country. Sam. I know, I know. Terrible. I'm a horrible Texan.

SPEAKER_02:

I wish there's gotta be some sort of filter I could put this through where it's like make it into a rock song or something, and then maybe you like you listen to it again and you're like, this is amazing. And it's like, right, yeah, it's right there.

SPEAKER_01:

Now just just get a little twang. That's all.

SPEAKER_03:

There's like a whole right, there's like a whole host of people that make videos like that of like do a song but do it in the style of blank. Um, I see a lot of things where it's like, what if Slipknot wrote, you know, like uh some Christmas carol or something, and it's it's pretty good. People do pretty good um like impressions of it. So maybe that's what I need to look for. I need to look hands of time in the style of like Metallica or something. Um all right, number 11 on the mix and number two on the year. Uh, probably not surprising if you know Matt, that it is Spaceman and Tulsa by Counting Crows.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, so in 2024, Counting Crows put out uh like an EP, and then this year they came out with the entire album. They just sort of added about a handful of songs to that EP and came out with a whole album. Um, but yeah, Spaceman and Tulsa. This ended up being the number one song on my Apple Rewind. Like this was the song I listened to the most. So it's second on this countdown because I I just love the number one song coming up here. But um, this song was awesome. I I just think it's about kind of overcoming maybe struggles and and sort of your place in the world to to sort of achieve something great, and in this case, you know, be a rock and roll star as he says it, and maybe add a little vulgarity on top of that. But it's uh it's so well written. I the storytelling I think is incredible, and uh it's it's also just very listenable, I think, right? Like it's just a cool kind of I don't think it you know made many waves on any of the pop charts or whatever, but I do think it's a very listenable song.

SPEAKER_03:

I agree, yeah. I agree, I especially agree with like the storytelling element of it. You just get a really solid picture of this kind of the spaceman in Tulsa, right? Like this uh and what that all means. And and as he said, it's like about um metamorphosis, um, you know, it's broken lives becoming something better, to quote him. So I think that really comes through in the song, and I think it's a very classic Counting Crows track, um, in the best of ways. Like it it very much sounds like something of theirs um in a really nice way. So, you know, they have the formula and they're still they're still rocking it, they're still doing a great job at it. I think it works really well. Okay, here we go. The number one pick of the year, um, and I really liked this song, so well done. This is If the world burns down by Casey Musgraves.

SPEAKER_02:

Casey Musgraves is normally country, but she's kind of crossed over and uh, you know, maybe a little just more pop-ish, I guess. Um, but this doesn't really sound very country. Um it's from the soundtrack to season two of the Netflix show, Nobody Wants This. Uh, I still haven't seen that show. I I only know of it. I don't know. This just came across. I found the song because it was like new Casey Musgraves. Um and yeah, when I just listened to it, it was just it's amazing. It's it's pretty it's a love song, uh, but it's not like a cliched message. I and it's and it's just so simple that it's like if everything falls apart, like you were it for me. And uh it's not sappy, but it just kind of says everything that needs to be said there. And so um, such a great, uh well-written song, and her voice is always amazing, of course. And so um, I don't know, with the holidays coming up, I you know, we're gonna take a couple weeks off this show. I I may try to check out the show, but I'm not gonna make any promises. But you know, if you've seen the show and you think I should watch it at Super Awesome Mix, hit us up and and and let me know if it's worth it.

SPEAKER_03:

I mean, I I have definitely watched the show. Um, my wife and I even did like a rewatch of season one before season two came out. It's it's a fun show. You know, I mean, it's not like the most amazing, like, oh my god, this is the best thing I've ever seen. But you know, when you're just looking for like a wind-down TV show and kind of soapy and you're like, oh, I do they, you know, will they, won't they? Like, it's good for that. It's definitely good for that. Um, they're entertaining two characters, um, and and the side characters are also really fun.

SPEAKER_02:

Anyway, it's it's I call that a palette cleanser. Yes, right. Like after you watch a really intense show, right? Like you get something to just be like, all right, I I need to fall asleep, and and so I'm just gonna watch this. So maybe it's okay. It's a good palette cleanser, maybe.

SPEAKER_03:

It is, yeah, exactly. Like you're you're not gonna watch this and be stressed out after watching it. Um perfect. So that's perfect. Yeah, that's great. But um, yes, I I have seen the show, I really like it, and I really like the song. And and Casey Musgraves is definitely like one of the few and one of my favorite voices from country. Um, and I agree this song is not country, but she is just so talented, like it's hard to ignore her talent. Um, and she just has such an amazing voice on her. And I tend to really like everything that she sings, so it's really it's quite the honor, you know, I that I bestow upon her, which obviously she's um she cares very deeply about, my opinion. Um but it's a really nice she does.

SPEAKER_02:

You send out those plaques every year to artists that you deem worthy of listening to, and they treasure them.

SPEAKER_03:

It's true, it's true. I I absolutely do that. I keep getting a lot of cease and desist letters, though, but I will not cease. I will not desist.

SPEAKER_02:

No, you will not, you will not, you can't be stopped. Um, I will not. And I hope you're not stopped because you have a best of mix to put on next week. Okay, so there you have it. That's my best of 2025. If I miss something, like I said earlier, okay, hit us up on social media, threads, and uh Instagram at SuperOffMix, as well as YouTube. We put some fun videos up there. So check us out on all of that. And uh, Sam, now you've got some work to do with your best of mix. I mean, you probably feel like you lost a little bit of time with the newborn and everything. So so maybe there'll be some fun new songs for us next week, right?

SPEAKER_03:

It it's just gonna be like white noise tracks.

SPEAKER_02:

Like this was my favorite track of the year, and it's just white noise, and then you just doze off peacefully during the show. Yeah. Exactly.

SPEAKER_03:

This is hairdryer white noise, loopable. It's the best.

SPEAKER_02:

All right. Well, we'll get to work on 12 variations of white noise for next week. Uh so for Sam, this is Matt, and we'll see you then.
